Glenville’s Indian Meadows Park Now Home to a Disc Golf Course

A few years ago, disc golf began booming in popularity, especially during COVID, when many people were looking for safe and fun ways to spend time outdoors. For local resident and disc golf enthusiast Adam VanZandt, that spark of interest grew into an idea: Why doesn’t Glenville have a disc golf course?

That simple question set the wheels in motion for a project that has since brought a brand-new disc golf course to Indian Meadows Park—a place where recreation, nature, and community all come together.

From Idea to Reality

The vision started with a proposal to the Glenville Town Board, backed by other community members who also saw the potential for disc golf in town. From there, it became a true grassroots effort.

Designing the course was no small task. Over the span of more than a year, the designer spent countless hours walking the park’s massive wooded property to find the right balance between playability and preservation. The goal was to place the course in a way that minimized environmental impact—avoiding the removal of mature trees, improving trails, and even helping manage invasive species.

The result is a course that encourages people to hike, explore, and enjoy the woods, all while protecting the park’s natural beauty.

Building Something for Everyone

Of course, there were challenges along the way. The team went through a few redesigns to ensure the course fit safely alongside the park’s many other activities. But in the end, the addition filled a gap in Glenville’s recreation options—providing a new sport that’s accessible, affordable, and welcoming to all.

And it’s catching on quickly. Park staff report that players are out on the course all the time. “It’s awesome that it’s free, easy to do, and people of all skill levels can enjoy it,” enthusiast Adam VanZandt said. “You can come with just one disc—or like me, with 20 or 25—and either play competitively or just walk around with friends and have fun.”

Why Disc Golf Works Here

Unlike traditional ball golf, disc golf makes use of wooded and natural spaces without the need for major clearing or construction. The sport works within the landscape, turning forests, meadows, and fields into playful challenges.

And while the discs may look a bit like frisbees, the game itself has more in common with golf. There are drivers, fairway discs, and mid-range discs—all designed for different throws and distances, much like a golfer chooses between clubs. That variety, combined with the natural layout of the park, means each round is both strategic and fun.

Free, Fun, and Open to All

Perhaps the best part? The Indian Meadows course is completely free to play. There are no reservations, teams, or equipment requirements beyond a single disc (though many players quickly find themselves collecting more). It’s low-impact, easy to learn, and a great way to spend time outdoors—whether solo, with family, or with friends.

As the popularity of disc golf continues to rise, Indian Meadows Park has positioned itself as a destination for both seasoned players and curious newcomers. It’s another step forward in making Glenville’s parks vibrant spaces for recreation, wellness, and community connection.

So grab a disc, head to Indian Meadows, and see what the excitement is all about—you might just find your new favorite pastime.
