Broadway Magic at Proctors Theatre

If you’re looking for a "wow" moment this break, head to the historic Proctors Theatre. From April 7–12, the hit Broadway musical Water for Elephants will be taking the MainStage.

  • The Draw: Based on the bestselling novel, this production features incredible acrobatics, circus arts, and a moving story that’s perfect for older children, teens, and adults.
  • Special Event: On Friday, April 10, don't miss the Thruway: A Capella Sing Off at the GE Theatre (inside Proctors) for a high-energy evening of vocal performances that music-loving teens will adore.

 

Journey to the Deep: Titanic: An Immersive Voyage

For a truly unique experience, head to Armory Studios NY for Titanic: An Immersive Voyage. While it’s open to all ages, the depth of history and technology makes it a standout for older kids and history buffs.

  • What to Expect: Walk through life-size recreations of the ship's luxurious interiors and view over 200 authentic artifacts.
  • The Teen Factor: The VIP Virtual Reality experience allows you to "dive" 2.5 miles below the ocean surface to explore the wreck site. It’s an educational and hauntingly beautiful use of tech that will keep older kids talking for days.
  • Pro Tip: On Friday, April 10, the exhibit is hosting a special Launch Anniversary event with live music and special gallery access.

 

Dive into Science at miSci

The Museum of Innovation and Science (miSci) is a staple for break week. This year, miSci is hosting "Earth Week" break classes (April 6–10) where kids in grades K-5 can participate in hands-on STEAM activities.

  • What to Expect: Daily themes like "Awesome Atmosphere" and "Pollution Fighters." Each session includes museum exploration and a show in the Dudley Observatory planetarium.
  • Don’t Miss: The Design Zone exhibit, where kids can learn the math and science behind video games and music production.

 

Take Flight at the Empire State Aerosciences Museum (ESAM)

Located right next to the Schenectady County Airport, ESAM offers an up-close look at aviation history.

  • Spring Series Events: On Tuesday, April 7, ESAM is hosting "Young Aviators" classes. Kids in grades K-2 can learn about the massive C-130 Hercules, while grades 3-6 can dive into a B-17 class and model build.
  • The Experience: Walk through the outdoor airpark to see restored military jets and take a ride on the Simulated Reality Vehicle.

 

Catch the Action: NY Phoenix Basketball

Professional basketball is back in Schenectady! The New York Phoenix play their home games at the brand-new M&T Bank Center at Mohawk Harbor.

  • Family Fun: Pro hoops are a great way to spend the evening of April 2nd or the afternoon of April 12th. Check the NY Phoenix schedule and details for the games.
  • Location: Since the arena is at Mohawk Harbor, you can grab dinner at Druthers or The Bunker right after the game!

 

Explore the Great Outdoors: Empire State Trail

If the April weather cooperates, grab the bikes or strollers and head to the Empire State Trail.

  • The Route: The Schenectady portion offers beautiful riverfront views and paved paths. Access the trail near Mohawk Harbor for a scenic ride toward the historic Stockade District.
  • Sweet Stops: After your ride, stop by the Jay Street Marketplace for a treat, or a browse through the independent toy and book shops. On Sunday, April 12th the Schenectady Greenmarket makes its return outside around city hall.  
  • Worth the Detour: For those looking for a more rugged outdoor experience, head to Plotter Kill Nature and Historic Preserve in Rotterdam—an ideal destination for hiking. There are three spectacular waterfalls, all with magnificent sights in spring high water and in winter ice. 

 

Indoor Fun at Via Port Rotterdam

For those "April Showers" days, head over to Via Port Rotterdam.

  • Via Aquarium: Walk through the shark tunnel and explore the stingray touch tank. It’s an immersive experience that feels a world away from upstate New York.
